In Feng Shui the entryway of your home is so important that it has its own name - the Mouth of Chi. This is the portal through which all energy enters the home, so it’s very important that the area around it is maintained properly for positive energy flow. This week we’re discussing what steps to take if your foyer is feeling a little stagnant.
Clear the Clutter
For proper energy flow, organization is key! The door should swing open easily and into an open space, meaning that the inside of your entrance should be as clutter-free as possible. Cluttered and disorganized entries create a stagnant energy pool; not a great first impression!
One of the best ways to maintain an organized space is to use smart storage solutions.
Rejuvenation: Brendon Farrell 10-Fin Hook Rack and Perkins Spindle Bench

Crate and Barrel: Casement Black Large Sideboard

Welcome Mats and Rugs
Welcome mats are a very important component in an entryway; it’s the first step into your home and sets the tone of what to expect upon entering. To ensure a hospitable atmosphere, choose a high-quality mat that showcases your personality. Make sure it’s clean, maintained, and fits the space properly.
West Elm: Pop Woven Doormat

Garnet Hill: Bear Bike

For inside the home, I love utilizing a beautiful rug to ground the space and add color. I recommend finding a rug with varying texture to hide outdoor debris in between cleaning.

Proper Ventilation
Entryways let in a variety of dust and allergens, and there’s not much to do to prevent it. Adding an air purifier to the space will help catch these particles before they can settle in on surfaces and clothes. Which means less dusting overall!
Personalize with Meaningful Decor
Your entryway should reflect your personality. Consider personalizing a table or shelf with a small altar of personal memorabilia and art. The point is to create an authentic impression that people will remember, so don’t overthink what’s on your altar.

Add Plants and Fresh Flowers
Feng Shui encourages the infusion of natural elements into your space, and so do I! The energy difference some greenery can make is astonishing. It brings a certain vitality that most entryways have a hard time achieving on their own. Fresh flowers are also great for this, just make sure you remove anything wilted or dead.

The point of a well-maintained entryway is not for aesthetics, but for how it serves you and your home. Listen to yourself and focus on the energy that you want! Intention goes a very long way when it comes to design and Feng Shui.
