As a parent, few things are more important than your child having a consistently good night’s sleep. Their sleep quality is your sleep quality, afterall! A favorable bedroom environment can go a long way in avoiding restless nights.
Here are some things I keep in mind when designing a child’s bedroom:
Varied Lighting
Fill the space with soft lighting and vary the sources they come from. Reading lights, twinkle lights, multiple night light options, and a soft bedside lamp are my go-tos. The point is to give your child the autonomy to set what light levels they need, while making sure the energy in the room stays relaxed.
Declutter
Decluttering is most important in any bedroom, and your child’s is no exception. Incorporate furniture that helps encourage organization and hides visually distracting toys. Softness is very important, so choose upholstered furniture or storage with soft corners.

Soft Colors
Color choice is incredibly important in a child’s bedroom. Like furniture, opt for soft colors that create a sense of safety and coziness. Colors like yellow, cream, peach, beige, light blue and cool gray are great places to start. I like to save bright colors for accent pieces like artwork or chairs, since an oversaturated room can become too stimulating for bedtime. As always, I love looking to Sherwin Williams for inspiration.
Bed Positioning
The position of the bed is important for any bedroom, and your child’s is no exception. The bed should be in the command position; dictating the rest of the room layout. Here are some guidelines I follow when it comes to bed placement:
Do not the bed in direct alignment with the entrance door
Placement diagonal to the door is best
The headboard should be resting on a full wall
Your child should be able to see the door when lying in your bed
Security when sleeping is so important for children. Placing their bed in the command position will ensure there are no surprises for them while they slumber.
Smart Furniture Selection
I suggest choosing a bed frame that is raised from the ground with no storage underneath. Energy (Chi) should be able to flow freely in the room. It’s important to choose furniture that is still low to the ground as it promotes independence, and creates a more comfortable environment for your child. Like the storage, choose pieces that are soft and rounded for safety and proper energy flow.

Designing with Feng Shui in mind creates a beautiful groundwork for a child’s bedroom that is focused on comfort, safety, and independence. Make it a point to involve them as well if you can! Allowing your child to choose a piece of art, an accent color, or even a theme gives them an agency that is so important for happiness and development. As always, have fun with it!
