The temperature is falling and the holidays are upon us once more! No matter what you’re celebrating, December is a wonderful time of year to open your home to friends and family.
A lot can be done within the home to create a warm, and inviting atmosphere. Eliminate stress, boost holiday happiness, and let the good “chi” flow with these Festive Feng Shui tips from yours truly:
Cleanse the home
Consider a clean home a blank slate for new energy! Decluttering and setting the stage for a new season is an important part of my holiday decorating. It allows the seasonal decor to really breathe in your home, rather than looking cramped amongst non-essential items. I also recommend energetic space cleaning, or smudging. Common ways to do this are by burning incense or sage, or by performing an orange peel ceremony
Prepare your front door
The entryway of your home is so important that it has its own name - the Mouth of Chi. This is the portal through which all energy enters the home, so it’s very important that the area around it is maintained properly for positive energy flow during the holidays! Decorate with Fire and Earth Element
Earth Element: This element celebrates the bounty of the earth and is represented using light yellow and sandy brown colors. Incorporate the grounding, solid square shapes representative of the earth element wherever possible. Earthenware containers are highly recommended.
Fire Element: This element has a nourishing and supportive relationship with Earth Element and is represented using reds, oranges and gold. Incorporate triangular shapes wherever possible to represent fire. Work candles into centerpieces or light up the fireplace to warm up and purify the energy of your home.
Facilitate comfortable dining
Firstly, separate the bar area so it’s not in the middle of the food prep or serving area. That allows guests to grab a drink without getting into the middle of all the other activities and causing a traffic jam.
The perfect dinner table will fit everyone comfortably with at least 20-25 inches of table space per person. If furniture needs re-arranging, be sure to account for cleared walkways and space behind chairs. Remember that table decorations should never block visibility between guests.
Consider decor derived from nature
Poinsettias, daffodil bulbs, and amaryllis plants are beautiful ways to decorate your home by introducing Wood Element to any areas of the home that need it. One of my favorite holiday trends I see is drying oranges to hang around the home. It’s sustainable, eye-catching, and fills the space with a wonderful scent.
Deck the halls with Feng Shui and enjoy the harmony and balance it will bring to your environment! Happy Holidays!
