Biophilia in our Workspaces

Where and how we work today is so much more flexible than in the past. However, some firms are now requesting that we come back into the office location at least part of the time.

That said, there are many things that companies can do to make these changes more palatable. Adding more Biophilia into the office is just one of those ways. Biophilia enhances productivity and reduces stress. So there is a good reason to incorporate some of these! And with many companies changing up their workspaces to downsize and make better use of hybrid arrangements, now is a great time to incorporate some Biophilic enhancements into the office. And they don’t have to be either large or expensive, just thoughtful.

Let’s talk about a few options:

Natural light

I often talk about the beneficial effects of incorporating circadian lighting into our home technology. But natural light will always be my favorite! Whether through windows or adjustable lighting, its benefits on improving focus and reducing fatigue are an accepted science.

A great option is using light, sheer curtains to filter sunlight while maintaining brightness. Most shade lines also have beautiful light filtering options for when needed, as well. Even when it’s necessary to lower them to block direct sun, the body can sense the changing light through the curtains or shades and the effects are just as strong.

Add Plants

Houseplants and greenery reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve air quality. They go a long way to creating a healthier workspace both physically and mentally. In addition to reducing stress, plants in our line of sight is also linked to increased creativity and a sense of calm. The reduction of mental clutter adds to increased focus.

Savvy office planners add ideas like vertical gardens or even space wall- mounted planters. Turning these over to maintenance services reduces the need for additional employees to maintain and keeps a constant rotation of healthy greenery.

There are many low-maintenance options like succulents, pothos or peace lilies that make for good choices in interior spaces.

Organic décor

Organic forms and textures are said to stimulate innovative thinking, as well as lower cortisol levels and encourage relaxation. Natural textures like wood and stone are grounding, and can go a long way toward changing up the often sterile feel of the modern office. They foster a connection to nature, creating balance within the space.

How can we achieve this?

  • Start with colors from nature in the décor and on the walls and flooring.

  • Use lighter color stains for wood furniture and fixtures.

  • Choose to incorporate natural materials such as bamboo and stone.

  • Add woven or textured rugs in the office space.

  • If you incorporate a path throughout the space, make it undulating in form.

Feng Shui and Biophilia go hand in hand. Creating better energy will always be supportive and nurturing. Our office environments can foster better positive energy with just a little thought.
