Grounding Your Home with the Earth Element

Updated: Nov 12, 2020

Feeling flustered, agitated and all over the place? Chances are your home or office lacks the nourishment, stability and support of the Earth Element. Technology and the modern world has a way of inadvertently disconnecting us from nature – so it’s important we find ways to reconnect as much as possible. The Earth Element is believed to play a key role in maintaining hope, health, and inner balance as well as grounding and increasing mental activity.

A strong, well-represented Earth Element in your home or office will help bring you back to center, calm and reassure you, as well as provide grounded support for all your creative endeavors and projects. The Earth Element is a feminine, protective energy – “Mother Earth,” as we so often refer to her as, sustains life while protecting, nourishing and healing us – all the things wonderful mothers do!

With respect the Feng Shui Bagua areas of the home, the Earth Element works most effectively in the Southwest, Northeast, West and Northwest corners of the home or office. In Feng Shui, the Earth Element is “created or produced by” the Fire Element, so it makes sense to try and integrate/offset the two wherever possible. Click here to find out more about working with the Fire Element.

Some key ways to quickly (and inexpensively) introduce the Earth Element to your home include:

– Colors: sand, beige, terracotta, taupe, earth-tones

– Shapes: squares, rectangles, flat surfaces, horizontal lines

– Materials: stones, crystals, ceramics, pottery, brick, earthenware, natural fibers, tile

– Lighting: crystal chandeliers, salt rock lamps, warm light

– Furnishings: yellow pillows, sandy rugs, cozy blankets

– Art: depicting landscape, fertile ground, little or no green/blue

– Furniture: dense, heavy, substantial, low to the ground

As with all things Feng Shui, the trick is to strike the right balance between the elements. Too much Earth creates a heavy/serious atmosphere, while too little attracts instability and chaos. Consult your Feng Shui practitioner to achieve the perfect balance for your space and personality.

All the best on your path to strength, protection and harmony. Happy decorating!
